Tape off the section you wish to protect.

Yea, it isn’t that complicated but is very effective. A little masking tape will protect other surfaces incase you slip while filing. It is a simple step that will save you lots of time on the finishing side by avoiding extra sanding or polishing the unwanted file marks.
