In a Pickle
What is Pickle?
Pickle is the acid solution that keeps oxidation at bay while you work.
What is it really?
Sodium Bisulfate. This acid salt in powder form is added to water releasing sulfuric acid.
Why heat it in a crock pot?
Optimum temperature for Pickle is 140 degrees. A crock pot with a ceramic base makes an economical vehicle to heat pickle. Professional “pickle pots” sold specifically for the jewelry industry cost hundreds of dollars.
How do you know when to change the Pickle?
After multiple uses the pickle will start to turn a bluish-green color. This is the copper leached from working with sterling. The blue-green means it is time to change it.
How do you neutralize it?
Baking Soda. Add it gradually to your cooled pickle. It will foam until it becomes neutral (acid to PH). Then it is safe to dispose of down the sink.
